Why Does My Furnace Light, Run a Minute, Then Shut Down?
That is the textbook dirty flame sensor. The sensor is a thin metal rod that confirms the burners actually lit. When it is coated in oxidation it cannot see the flame, so the control board cuts the gas as a safety measure, usually within thirty seconds to a minute. A sensor cleaning or swap typically has heat back the same visit. Worth knowing for this area: flame sensors foul faster in coastal air than they do inland, so a sensor that was cleaned two winters ago can be the culprit again.
What Causes a Furnace to Short Cycle?
Usually a choked filter: starved airflow lets heat build until the high-limit switch cuts the burners. The furnace runs hot, shuts itself down, cools off, and starts again - over and over, never finishing a heat call. Sometimes the limit switch itself has failed and trips at normal temperatures. Short cycling can also come from a thermostat mounted over a supply register or an oversized furnace, but the filter is where the diagnosis starts. Left alone, short cycling wears out igniters and stresses the heat exchanger, so it is not a live-with-it problem.
The Blower Runs but the Air Is Cold. What Is Wrong?
On a gas furnace, cold air at the vents usually means ignition failed upstream and the blower is just moving room-temperature air. On an electric furnace it points to a burned-out heating element or a failed sequencer that never stages the elements on.
